In the quiz on Data visualization, one of the options regarding Box plots is whether it shows distribution of the data. And I selected it as one of the options. However, this is wrong.
The Box plot does allow the user to understand the distribution based on the length of the whiskers, which indicate whether it is left skewed or right skewed or normal. It may not reveal the shape, but one can tell whether it is symmetric, left skewed or right skewed. Can you confirm?
Box plots certainly give an idea about the percentiles (25th, 50th, 75th). However, it does explain how the data is distributed in those intervals. Certainly it helps in determining the inter-quartile range as well. The whiskers are nothing but 1.5*IQR and can be changed. It does not provide correspondence to the distribution of the data. Hope this helps!!
